Introduction

In the article Harmignies 1987 there are drawings and detailed descriptions of the car flags of Hamburg. There are three types of car flags in Hamburg, introduced with the Senate Resolution of 4 January 1952. Sources:

Marcus Schmöger, 4 October 2001

With the 1982 regulation two of the three types of car flags have been abolished, at least de jure. Only type 2 survived. (...) According to Hertenstein 1985 (Jörg Hertenstein, Die Flaggen des Bundeslandes Hamburg, in Hamburgische Geschichts- und Heimatblätter no. 11, pp. 153-158, 1985) the old car flags of the two other types, although legally abolished, were still in stock, albeit rarely used, in June 1984.

Car Flag for Senators

Standarte der Senatoren an Kraftwagen

[Car Flag for Senators (Hamburg, Germany)] 1:1 | 25 cm × 25 cm |
by Marcus Schmöger
Flag adopted 4th January 1952, abolished 1st July 1982

This is a square flag, 25 × 25 cm, in the federal colours, containing a red-bordered white field with the greater arms in the centre. The white field measures 12 × 12 cm, the borders are 1.7 cm wide. This flag, called a Standarte, shall be used on special representative occasions only, on the cars of the Senators (Senatoren), which is the designation of the ministers in Hamburg.

Car Flag for Senate Syndics and for the Senate Representative to the Federal Government

Standarte der Senatssyndizi und dem Bevollmächtigter des Senats bei der Bundesregierung an Kraftwagen

[Car Flag for Senate Syndics (Hamburg, Germany)] 18:25 | 18 cm × 25 cm
by Marcus Schmöger
Flag adopted 4th January 1952, readopted 1st July 1982 for Senators and Senatorial Councillors

This is basically the same flag as the Senators' standard, only that it is not square, but rectangular 18 × 25 cm. The white field measures 8.5 × 8.5 cm and the borders are 1.25 cm wide. This flag shall also be used only on special occasions on the cars. Those entitled to use it are the Senatssyndizi and the Bevollmächtigter des Senats der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg bei der Bundesregierung (Representative of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg to the Federal Government). The Senatssyndizi (Senate Syndics) are basically the same as the Staatssekretäre (state secretaries) in other Länder, i.e. the deputies of the senators.

Marcus Schmöger, 4 October 2001

With the 1982 regulation two of the three types of car flags have been abolished, at least de jure. Only this type survived. Up to 1982 this was the car flag for special occasions used by the Senatssyndizi, that had been renamed in the meanwhile to Staatsräte. This type 2 car flag now shall be used for 'representative occasions' both by senators and state secretaries.
